The main treatment of heartburn is the usage of antacids. These special medications are used to neutralize the stomach acid. Thus in order to do so, antacids initially releases a low concentration of sodium hydroxide ions(OH-) so one does not suffer from any chemical burns. However, once these come in contact with ions found in acids (H+), they effectively neutralize stomach acid by chemically merging with one another, which produces water (H2O), a neutral compound with a pH of 7. To the left, you can see a basic diagram of how neutralization works in our digestive system.
